Loyalty and ideological ties of politicians to political parties in the reform era are still fairly low. This is evident from the strengthening of the tendency of the migration (crossing over the fence) of the politicians from one political party to the other. The phenomenon of migration does not only happen with politicians at the national politics, it also occurs in the regions.

The phenomenon of politicians changing a party actually is nothing new in the 13-year journey of democracy and democratization in Indonesia. But, the current phenomenon is the strengthening of tendency of the migration of politicians – especially the regional heads – to the Democratic Party.

There are some examples, a politician from the Crescent Star Party (PBB) who serves as the governor of west Nusa Tenggara, Zainul Majdi; former Chair of the South Sulawesi Chapter (DPD) of the golkar Party, who is also the Mayor of Makassar, Ilham Arif Sirajuddin; and also National Mandate Party (PAN) politician who is also the Vice governor of west Java, Dede yusuf. This phenomenon has raised interesting questions: what is the motive of the politician migration to the Democratic Party? And what benefits for the party founded Susilo Bambang yudhoyono that this migration brings? This edition of the Indonesian Update raises a main theme on this phenomenon of political migration to the ruling party.

This edition of the Indonesian Update also discusses several important topics in the field of politics and social affairs. In politics, it talks about the hijacking of Indonesian ship MV Sinar Kudus. In social affairs, it discusses the 2010 Healthy Indonesia, the Bill on the Land Procurements for Development, and the Bill on the Handling of the Poor. Another theme is the National Examinations.
The regular publication of the Indonesian Update with its actual themes is expected to help policy makers in the government and the business sector, academicians, and international think tanks get actual information and contextual analyses on economic, political, social, and cultural developments in Indonesia.
